Do you like to hear why I am passionate about holistic approach to medicine?
In my childhood I have seen many people suffering and dying of illnesses prematurely. I wanted to learn how to help people to recover from illness and live longer..
My father became seriously ill and died of a heart attack. He was also suffering with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease increasingly becoming breathless. He was a smoker since his early adulthood and he was getting worse over the years. I also knew that he was under a lot of stress. He may have smoked to find some comfort. We all know that smoking can kill but it is not so obvious that the real killer was stress or the mental state that is craving for substances. I wished I knew about lifestyle medicine then and he would have lived longer if he didn't smoke.
After I became a doctor, many of my relatives, family friends and people who lived in the village I grew up, asked my advice regarding their health issues. When I listened to their stories I realised that how they lived, what they were doing to make a living and what they do to cope with life's difficulties were the causes of their deteriorating health. The drugs they were taking also contributing to some of their complaints. Some people had nutritional deficiencies. I didn't know then how to help with their problems other than prescribing more medications to relieve symptoms.
As a specialist in anaesthesia, I have anaesthetised thousands of people with chronic diseases over three decades in the UK and Australia. I have researched peoples' lifestyles and mindsets and I observed the common association of lifestyle factors and psychological factors as root causes leading to chronic diseases.
I have helped thousands of people to have their surgical operation safely and to recover well and return home without complications. I continue to do so because patients require surgery to remove or replace damaged body parts. But it was eye opening to realise that these damages have been caused by preventable lifestyle factors and we are not making any attempt to modify those in our patients..
I don't think our job is over until we help them to change their root causes causing organ damage. When we let them go back and live with the same conditions that caused damage they keep returning with more damage requiring more and more surgery. Surgery or drug treatments would not cure the underlying disease process. They need help by qualified lifestyle medicine specialists who are trained to use scientifically proven approaches.
I have been advocating lifestyle change for many years because I was a first hand witness of this increasing crisis killing and disabling people globally. I was not alone feeling this way and every health professional I spoke about this agreed with me that Health Care System must change to research, develop and educate evidence based preventative measures starting from the medical school.
I became a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine first and I graduated in Diploma of International Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine.. Then I became a member of the Australasian Association of Lifestyle Medicine and , I pursued further studies and obtained a Fellowship in Lifestyle Medicine.
I am also trained in behavior transformation techniques such as Mindfulness, Clinical Hypnosis, Neurolinguistics Programming, Buddhist Psychotherapy, Mindfulness Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and Heal Your Life Teacher Training.
As a mindfulness practitioner for decades, I became increasingly aware of the true nature of the mind. and it's influence on the body.
There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for me than empowering another person to overcome hardships and challenges in life. Therefore I also trained to be a life coach.
Everyone has a right to live healthy. To be able to help people to live healthy and to
create a life of their dreams, is a dream come true for me. Now, I can help using my knowledge and skills as a Lifestyle Medicine Doctor to prevent and reverse illnesses giving people the right to live healthy and live long.
